What are eccentric, concentric and static contractions?

Eccentric, concentric and static contractions are types of muscle contractions.

An eccentric muscle contraction is the elongation of the muscle when tension acts on it. This happens because the tension or the opposing force is greater than the force of the muscle. For example, during a bicep curl when the dumbbell goes up to the shoulder the triceps muscle lengthens and experience eccentric muscle contraction, while on the way down the bicep muscle lengthens and undergo eccentric muscle contraction.

In a concentric muscle contraction the muscle shortens when initiating a force. Taking the example of a bicep curl again, on the way up when the bicep experiences a concentric contraction it causes the elbow to bend taking the hand near to the shoulder. While a concentric contraction of the triceps muscle, on the way down, moves takes the hand away from the shoulder.

Static muscle contractions allow no movement of muscles and so the length of muscles remains the same.
